Flea and tick control in five steps

The good news about fleas is that they prefer animals to humans. The bad news is that they’ll bite to see how tasty you are and they’ll drive your pet nuts. The further bad news is that a single female flea can lay 400 eggs, making it difficult to get rid of them once they become established in your home. In Michigan, fleas peak in the humid summer months, but they can be an indoor problem any month of the year.

The news about ticks is all bad (unless they fall off before they bite). They’re equally fond of you and your pet. And they transmit Lyme disease, although St. Clair and Sanilac counties have a lower incidence of Lyme than many counties on the west side of Michigan.

What can you do to prevent a flea and tick problem or get rid of one?

1. KILL FLEAS IN THE YARD!

Call Greenlawn to secure the perimeter. We can apply a product to help control fleas and ticks throughout the yard. Greenlawn’s yard spray concentrates help protect the premises from flea and tick infestation for up to 4 weeks depending on the weather and other environmental conditions.

2. KILL FLEAS ON YOUR PET

Treat your dog or cat with an immediate-acting flea spray, foam or shampoo. Follow label directions carefully.

3. PROTECT PETS FROM RE-INFESTATION

Apply a long-lasting flea dip, attach a flea collar, get a veterinarian’s prescription for a systemic flea and tick application, or begin a regular schedule of spraying. Follow label instructions and repeat as recommended.

4. CLEAN HOUSE AND PLACES WHERE PETS SPEND TIME

Vacuum thoroughly as fleas go through three stages of life before they start hopping around. Be sure to vacuum baseboards, upholstered furniture, under cushions, bedding, and all carpeted areas. Wash or discard pet’s bedding. Discard vacuum bag outside immediately after use.

5. KILL FLEAS IN THE HOUSE

Apply a household flea spray or use a fogger. Concentrate on areas where pets rest. Follow label directions to provide proper coverage. If using a fogger, follow up with a spray to reach under tables, behind drapes and behind furniture.
