Greenlawn’s most popular service is a six-step program of lawn fertilizing and weed control that starts in early spring.
The first application occurs just as lawns are waking up in the areas of Southeast Michigan influenced by the waters of Lake Huron, St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair. Greenlawn times it for maximum effectiveness.
The six-step service combining weed control and lawn fertilizing continues periodically, about every five weeks, through late fall on a well-timed schedule planned by Greenlawn.
Customers in St. Clair County, Sanilac County, Macomb County and the Grosse Pointe swear by Greenlawn’s program of lawn fertilizing and weed control.
The program is most effective when the property owners help. Here’s all the customer needs to do:
- If it’s a liquid application we ask you to avoid watering and mowing for a 24-hour period to let the application settle into the turf.
- If we apply a granular application, it works better if you irrigate your lawn to activate the product.
- Maintain a lawn mowing height of 3 – 3 1/2 inches during the growing season to maximize shading of roots. Sharp mower blades are imperative to reduce blade tearing.
- Irrigate lawn in times of drought. A typical lawn needs at least 1 inch of rainfall/irrigation per week to maintain lush, green color.

However, every homeowner is encouraged to do a soil test, have it analyzed by the MSU Extension Service, then share the results with Greenlawn so we can further customize our approach to your landscape’s needs.
In St. Clair County, Port Huron has an MSU Extension Service. In Macomb County, it’s located in Clinton Township.
Application 1 – Early Spring
Greenlawn fertilizes your lawn and attacks crabgrass before it starts sprouting. The fertilizers we use include urea and potash, and for newly seeded or sodded lawns, a dose of phosphorous. At the same time, we select and apply a weed-control product for pre-emergent control of crabgrass and many other broadleaf weeds.
Application 2 – Late Spring
This fertilizer application consists of a balanced nitrogen, phosphate (if needed), and potassium plus iron to promote greening. The weed-control products we include with this application target dandelions, plantain, chickweed and other unwanted plants in your lawn.
Application 3 – Summer
Another shot of fertilizer and weed control formulated for summer weather conditions. This application may be granular and may be combined with our grub-control application if included in your program.
Application 4 – Late Summer
A late summer weed-and-feed application combines our specially formulated fertilizers and weed controls to arrest those dandelions, plantains and chickweeds whose seeds have drifted into your yard.
Application 5 – Early Fall
By early fall, most perennials will have come and gone and your annual flower plantings will have peaked, but weed seeds are still active. So, Greenlawn applies another dose of lawn fertilizer and weed control, adjusting the products to get the best results possible for our fall weather conditions in Southeast Michigan.
Application 6 – Late Fall
Believe it or not, fall is the best time to control weeds. Weed control products applied at this time are transported to the roots, killing the entire plants instead of just the parts above the soil surface. The late fall lawn-fertilizing formula keeps your grass healthy right until the time it goes dormant and becomes covered with snow.

Your soil test starts with obtaining a $25 test kit from the MSU Extension Service bookstore. Follow instructions to collect one cup of soil from your yard. Two weeks after mailing it in, you’ll have your test results. Easy.
